HEALTH CARE ACCESS

We value the health of our families and communities, and believe that children and adults should be able to receive medical services that they can afford.

For this reason, we've fought for and won a number of campaigns dedicated to improve and expand health insurance programs, clinic services, and health outreach efforts. PICO California and our member congregations have been working for many years to improve our communities' access to quality, affordable health care.

Healthcare for Everyone in California

PICO California affiliates are taking advantage of an historic opportunity to expand healthcare coverage in our state. In January of this year, Arnold Schwarzenegger became the first governor in California history to express his commitment to achieving universal health coverage.

Healthy Kids Campaign

Over the last few years, we have been focusing on the health of the most innocent in our communities- children. We believe all children should have access to quality healthcare so they can grow into the future leaders of our state and nation.

Insuring California's kids will take a team effort, but we know it's doable. 90% of our kids are insured. Of the 800,000 kids without coverage, most are already eligible for existing programs including Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. PICO California leaders are working on a number of strategies to close this gap and provide health insurance to all children in our state.

Most recently, we invited 100 faith leaders to Sacramento to talk with their local representatives about the importance of covering all kids. In January we organized 533 "Speech Watching Parties" to view Governor Schwarzenegger's State of the State address. We have been paying close attention to the Governor's health care proposals and will continue to work with him to ensure that our kids have access to the care they need.

SCHIP Reauthorization

PICO California is fighting hard for the State Children's Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP). This federal program provides billions of dollars which help make covering all kids possible. This important bill is up for reauthorization this year, and if Congress does not increase funding, tens of thousands of kids that have been part of the program will lose coverage. We want Congress to provide $60 billion for this succesful program so states can cover all kids. That is why we have made two trips to Washington DC to talk Congressional leaders.
